Speed hump types we install
Different humps for different jobs. Pick wrong and it's either ineffective or eats your fleet's suspension.
Asphalt speed hump
Hot-mix asphalt screed-formed over the existing pavement, primed and bonded. 75mm high Γ 3.7m long is the standard. Permanent, cheap, looks integrated. Best for carparks and private roads.
Rubber bolt-down
Modular rubber sections, bolted to the pavement with masonry anchors. Reflective yellow/black stripes built in. Relocatable. Best for short-term traffic calming or rental sites.
Watts profile cushion
Narrow cushions in pairs across the lane β cars slow, fire trucks and ambulances straddle. Austroads-approved for streets with emergency vehicle access.
Speed table
Long flat-top hump (raised crossing). Pedestrian crossing on top. Used at school gates, retail entries, shared zones. AS 1428.1 compliant ramps.
Rumble strips
Series of small bumps that vibrate the vehicle. Used as warning before a stop sign or major hump. Asphalt or thermoplastic.
Wheel stops vs humps
Wheel stop is for the end of a bay (stops car hitting wall). Speed hump is for the lane (slows car through carpark). Different jobs. We install both.
Where speed humps go in
The 80% of jobs we do, in order of frequency.
Strata & body corp carparks
Resident-on-resident speeding complaints. We size for 15-20 km/h target. Asphalt humps usually, with chevron marking.
Retail & commercial carparks
Pedestrian conflict at entries and trolley bays. Watts cushions or speed tables let delivery trucks through but slow cars.
Schools
Drop-off and pickup zones. Big visible humps + signage + line marking. Coordinated with the school P&C and the principal.
Private estates & rural roads
Long private driveways where neighbours speed. Austroads-spec hump series, gradient signage, advisory speed signs.
Industrial sites
Forklift/HGV mixed-traffic zones. Bigger profile humps designed for the heavier vehicle, slowing the smaller.
Caravan parks & resorts
Mixed pedestrian/vehicle environment with kids about. Speed tables at pinch points work best β slows and signals.
What you get with each install
No half-measures. Hump goes in, signs go up, line marking gets done, you get the doc.
Engineering specification
Hump dimensions matched to the target speed. Cross-section drawing supplied for council/strata records if you need it.
Chevron marking
White or yellow chevrons. Thermoplastic for high-traffic, acrylic for budget. Reflective glass beads.
W5-V signage
Reflective speed hump warning signs either side. Posts installed if needed.
As-built & SWMS
Site-specific SWMS, $20M public liability cert, as-built photos. Hand it to the committee.

Speed Hump Installation β questions answered
What's the difference between a speed hump and a speed bump?
Hump is long (3-4m), gentle β slows traffic to 25 km/h, fine for carpark and street use. Bump is short (under 1m), aggressive β slows traffic to 8-10 km/h, only for low-volume areas like resident-only driveways. Get them mixed up and you'll either snap suspension components or not slow anyone down.
Do I need council approval for a speed hump?
Not on private property β your carpark, your driveway, your strata land. You don't need approval. On a public road or council-owned shared zone you need council approval and engineering signoff. We can advise either way once we know the site.
How much does a speed hump cost installed?
Asphalt speed hump from $850+GST for a single hump on existing pavement. Rubber bolt-down from $1,200+GST. Speed table (long flat-top) $2,500-$4,500. Watts cushion arrays $3,000-$8,000 depending on lane count. All prices include chevron marking and standard signage.
How long does the install take?
Single asphalt hump: half a day. Rubber bolt-down: 2-3 hours. Speed table: 1-2 days including cure time. We can usually be on site within 1-3 weeks of accepted quote.
What standards do you build to?
Carpark speed humps to AS 2890.1 Β§3.2.6. Residential streets and private roads to Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6 Β§3.5. Signage to AS 1742.13. Line marking to AS 1742.2 and AS 4049.
Can a fire truck or ambulance still get through?
Yes if you spec it right. Watts profile cushions are designed exactly for that β passenger cars are slowed, wider emergency vehicles straddle the cushions and keep moving. Important for any site fire trucks need to reach β schools, aged care, large strata.
