What We Do

Asphalt Driveways, Central Coast

Hot-mix AC10. Proper prep. Built to last.

Our driveways are hot-mix AC10 asphalt laid over a compacted road base. We come out and look at every site before we price it, because what is underneath and how the truck gets in matter as much as the size. Have a look at a full new build and a shared driveway resurface we've done on the Coast.

An asphalt driveway is the job we do most on the Central Coast, and every one starts with the sub-base. The surface is the last thing we think about, not the first.

We use hot-mix AC10 asphalt as standard for residential work. It is dense, smooth and formulated for Australian conditions. We lay it hot, compact it thoroughly, and box the edges so the asphalt stays exactly where it should under load and temperature cycling. If you want to understand what depth and mix suit your site, our guide on how thick an asphalt driveway should be covers the detail.

Our quoting process includes a free site visit. We look at the existing surface, the sub-grade condition, and any drainage issues before we give you a number. There are no add-ons on the day, and no invoices with items you did not agree to. We also widen driveways, taking a single up to a double where the site allows. For a breakdown of what actually affects the price, see our guide on asphalt driveway costs.

Sub-base Assessment

We assess soil condition and drainage before laying a single thing. Shortcutting this step is why driveways fail early.

Hot-mix AC10

Standard residential grade hot-mix asphalt, durable, smooth, and built for Australian conditions.

Edge Restraints

Properly boxed edges and restraints stop the asphalt from spreading under load over time.

Compaction Testing

We test compaction throughout, not just on the surface but through each layer.

Line Marking

Bay marking, turning guides, or just a clean finish included where needed.

Site Clean-up

We leave the site cleaner than we found it. No spoil piles, no staining, no loose aggregate.

Anatomy of a driveway that lasts

The surface is the last thing we think about, not the first. Here is what sits under a driveway built to last 25 years.

Cross-section of a driveway: 50mm AC10 wearing course over a 150mm DGB20 compacted road base on a prepared subgrade, with crossfall for drainage. Crossfall to drainage 50mm 150mm
  1. Hot-mix AC10 wearing course 50mm

Fine-graded asphalt, maximum 10mm aggregate. Dense, smooth and laid hot, then compacted. The closed surface keeps water out.

  2. Tack and prime coat

A bonding layer applied before the asphalt so the wearing course adheres to the base instead of floating on top of it.

  3. Compacted road base 150mm DGB20

Crushed rock compacted in layers and density-tested. This is the layer that decides whether the driveway lasts five years or twenty-five.

  4. Prepared subgrade and crossfall

Topsoil stripped, formation trimmed and compacted, with crossfall designed in so water runs off rather than sitting under the pavement.

Ask anyone quoting your driveway what base depth they have priced. If they cannot answer in millimetres, that is your answer.

Diagram shows typical construction sequence for standard site conditions on the NSW Central Coast. Actual scope, depths, and materials are determined on-site, as conditions vary by substrate, drainage, and access. Speak to our crew for an assessment specific to your project.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost on the Central Coast?

We don't put a square-metre rate online. Two driveways the same size can need very different work underneath. Here's what moves the price, so you can make sense of any quote you get, ours included. Our driveway-to-road connection job is a good example of edge work that changes the number.

Size and shape

Setting up, getting the hot mix delivered and running the roller cost about the same for 40 square metres as for 200. That's why small jobs cost more per metre.

What's under it

Laying over a sound surface is the cheapest way to go. Digging out a failed base, bringing in road base and compacting it costs the most.

Slope

Steep drives take more care to lay and compact, and that's extra crew time.

Access

If the truck can't reach the work, the crew barrows the mix in by hand. That's more labour.

Edges and drainage

Cutting in against concrete, brick or kerb and adjusting pits and grates takes skilled time. A straight, open run doesn't need it.

Extras

Tip fees for what we dig out, saw cutting and geotextile over reactive clay are all fair items. Cheap quotes often leave them out.

We can only give you a real number once we've seen your driveway. Give us a call or book a free site visit.

The Process

Every job follows the same standard. No steps skipped, no quality shortcuts.

Site Inspection

Free visit to assess sub-grade condition, drainage, existing surface and access requirements.

Sub-base Preparation

Excavation, boxing and compacted sub-base construction to the correct depth for your site.

Primer and Tack Coat

Bonding layer applied before asphalt placement to ensure full adhesion to the base course.

Hot-mix Placement and Handover

AC10 laid hot, compacted to specification, edges finished and site cleaned before handover.

Where do we lay asphalt driveways?

We work out of our yard at Somersby and lay driveways right across the Central Coast. That takes in Gosford and Erina close to home, Terrigal, Bateau Bay and The Entrance along the coast, Woy Woy and Umina Beach on the Peninsula, and Wyong, Tuggerah and Lake Haven up north. Wherever the job is, it's our own crew and plant, built to the same base depth.

Getting other quotes too? Smart. Take our questions sheet (PDF).

How long before I can drive on a new asphalt driveway?

You can drive on hot-mix asphalt within 24 to 48 hours in most conditions. We will advise you specifically based on temperature and the mix used on your job.

What is the difference between asphalt and bitumen?

In common use on the Central Coast, people use both terms to describe the same thing: a compacted hot-mix asphalt surface. Spray seal is a different product, less suited to residential driveways than hot-mix.

Do you do small residential jobs, or only large contracts?

We take on residential driveways of all sizes. A single driveway gets the same preparation standard as a commercial carpark. Call us for a no-obligation quote.

Why won't you price a driveway over the phone or from photos?

Photos can't show what's under the surface or how a truck will get in, and those two things set most of the cost. We come out, measure up and check the base and drainage, then give you a written price. The visit's free.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Our standard residential build is 50mm of AC10 on 150mm of compacted DGB20 road base, over a prepared subgrade. Soil and traffic can change the depths, so we look first. There's more detail in our driveway thickness guide.

Can you widen my single driveway to a double?

Yes, if the site and any council approvals allow it. We tie the new section into the existing base and surface so it looks like one driveway, not a patch job.

Can you resurface an old asphalt driveway instead of replacing it?

If the base underneath is still sound, an overlay or a mill and overlay brings the surface back for less. If the base has failed, resurfacing only hides the problem for a season. We'll tell you which one your driveway needs when we visit. More on asphalt repair and resurfacing.

Do you seal driveways or lay coloured asphalt?

No. We lay hot-mix asphalt in the standard black finish. We don't do seal coating or coloured asphalt.

Do I need council approval for the crossover?

Usually, yes. The crossover between the kerb and your boundary sits in the road reserve, and work there generally needs council approval. Tell us what you're planning when we visit and we'll let you know what applies.

Why most driveways fail early
  • Contractor quotes without visiting the site
  • Cold-lay asphalt over an unprepared sub-base
  • Hired paving rig with an unfamiliar operator
  • No compaction testing or proof documentation
  • Critical work subcontracted to a third party
  • Phone goes to voicemail after final payment

Surface cracks in year two. You pay to replace it in year five.
