Sports Court & Playground Asphalt: Cross-Section
The acrylic colour coat follows the asphalt exactly. Every fault in the base, every hollow in the wearing course, becomes a fault in the playing surface. Here is the full build-up from subgrade to line marking, coatings exaggerated so you can see them.
- Acrylic surface treatment & line marking 2–4mm
Filler/resurfacer coat tightens the asphalt texture, then two colour coats build the playing surface. Min. 14-day cure before line marking: 50mm lines applied last, never buried under colour coats.
- AC10 / AC7 wearing course 30–40mm
Dense graded asphalt, laid in a single lift with no construction joints across the playing surface. Surface flatness tested to ±3mm under a 3m straightedge in all directions. This is what decides if the bounce stays honest.
- Prime coat bond layer
Bitumen emulsion applied to the prepared base and cured 24–48 hr before overlay. Seals surface fines and bonds the wearing course so it cannot separate from the base.
- DGB20 crushed aggregate base 100–150mm
20mm nominal crushed rock to RMS Spec 3051, compacted to 98% modified MDD. Max deviation ±5mm under a 3m straightedge before the wearing course goes down. The base is the layer that separates a 10-year court from a 25-year one.
- Prepared subgrade
Natural ground trimmed, proof-rolled and compacted to 95% std MDD. Soft spots cut out and replaced. Grade set for 1:100 minimum crossfall so water runs off rather than sitting beneath the pavement.

Can the full scope, courts, playgrounds and carpark, be done in one holiday period?
For most Central Coast school scopes, yes. We assess the full scope during quoting and confirm whether the holiday window is achievable. We will not take a job we cannot complete in the agreed timeframe. Where staging is needed across two holidays, we plan that from the outset so the school knows what to expect.
What markings do you apply on school playgrounds?
We apply standard court markings including basketball keys, netball circles, four-square grids, hopscotch, number grids and directional arrows. All markings are applied by professional line marking equipment for clean, durable results that hold up to school-term use.
What documentation do you provide for school asphalt works?
We provide completion records including compaction test results, cross-fall measurements and surface inspection notes.
